Singapore Household Energy Consumption Study

Singapore Household Energy Consumption Study (SHECS) is an effort by the National Environment Agency (NEA) which aims to understand the general energy consumption patterns of the Singapore population and demographics. NEA is looking for 600 households from different housing types in Singapore to participate in the study. As part of the study, participating households will be monitored on their energy consumption for a period of 4 months for analysis and insights. The study will commence from January 2023 to October 2023.

Households participating in the study are required to:

  • Complete a set of survey questionnaires
  • Allow the installation of smart meters to study energy consumption of their residential unit for a minimum period of 4 months. Compact smart metering sensors will be installed on the main distribution box and additional smart plugs will be used on energy appliances.
The SHECS is open for participation, please click below to register your interest.
Energy Efficient Singapore
Singapore works towards reducing its greenhouse gas emissions by using less carbon-intensive fuels, and by improving energy efficiency.
In order to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions, Singapore has switched from carbon-intensive fuel oil to natural gas for electricity generation. Natural gas, which has lower carbon content per unit of electricity generated, now constitutes more than 95 per cent of Singapore’s fuel mix for electricity generation. However, there are limits to how much further Singapore can reduce its emissions. Therefore, improving energy efficiency will remain a key focus for Singapore.
A whole-of-government approach has been adopted to implement measures to improve the energy efficiency and to reduce the energy use of various sectors. NEA actively promotes energy efficiency in the industrial, household, and public sectors through legislation, incentives, and public education. The Building and Construction Authority (BCA) and the Land Transport Authority (LTA) promote energy efficiency in the buildings and transport sectors, respectively.
Household Sector
Households play an important role in mitigating climate change. This can be done through designing an energy-efficient home, buying energy-efficient appliances, and adopting energy-saving habits. These acts go a long way in helping Singapore in its energy conservation efforts.
Households can also reduce their energy consumption use by practising simple energy-saving habits. By doing so, households can save money and help fight climate change at the same time.

Benefits

As a participant, you will get to:

  • Understand if your household energy consumption is more than the average of similar household types.
